Before and After: How Stripes Transformed My Space

I’ve always loved minimalist interiors, but sometimes a plain wall can leave a space feeling unfinished. That’s where striped wallpaper changed everything for me. A soft stripe adds rhythm without clutter. It creates movement while still feeling timeless.

For this project, I experimented with several different stripe wallpaper styles across different rooms — from airy blue bedrooms to calm Scandinavian dining spaces — to see how subtle pattern could completely shift the mood of a room.

Why Stripe Wallpaper Works So Well

One of the reasons I keep returning to striped wallpaper is its versatility.

Unlike bold floral prints or dramatic murals, stripes feel easy to live with. They work beautifully in coastal homes, Scandinavian interiors, modern organic spaces, and even traditional rooms.

Vertical stripe wallpaper can make ceilings appear taller. Softer linen-texture stripes add warmth without visual heaviness. Thin pinstripes bring structure to minimalist interiors.

Even a subtle stripe can completely change how a room feels.

Some of my favorite benefits of decorating with stripes:

  • Makes small spaces feel taller
  • Adds visual texture without clutter
  • Brightens plain walls
  • Creates a timeless, tailored look
  • Works beautifully with wood, linen, and neutral decor
  • Feels calm rather than busy

Before & After: A Calm Blue Bedroom

Before adding wallpaper, this bedroom felt soft but slightly flat. The pale walls blended into the bedding and natural wood tones, leaving the room without much definition.

After adding a soft blue awning stripe wallpaper, the entire space felt brighter and more layered. The vertical stripes subtly lifted the room and created a calm coastal feeling without overwhelming the minimalist styling.

The room suddenly felt peaceful, airy, and finished.

Before & After: A Bathroom With More Character

Before, the bathroom felt clean but generic. The white walls and polished surfaces looked minimal, but the room lacked warmth and personality.

Adding a navy ticking stripe wallpaper completely transformed the atmosphere. The stripes added depth and elegance while keeping the room bright and open.

The space now feels timeless, tailored, and quietly luxurious.

Before & After: A Scandinavian Dining Room Refresh

This dining room already had beautiful natural wood furniture and soft neutral styling, but the walls still felt empty.

The sage green stripe wallpaper added warmth and gentle rhythm to the space. Paired with natural textures and light wood tones, the room instantly felt softer and more intentional.

Now the entire space feels calm, organic, and inviting.

Before & After: A Small Entryway That Feels Taller

Before, this staircase entry felt plain and slightly cramped. The blank white walls made the space feel visually flat.

Adding thin vertical pinstripes changed the proportions immediately. The eye naturally travels upward, making the ceilings appear taller while adding a clean, tailored look.

The result feels airy, elegant, and much more finished.

Before & After: A Creative Home Office

This workspace originally felt functional but uninspiring. The blank wall behind the desk lacked warmth and personality.

Instead of a traditional stripe, I chose a soft wave-inspired stripe pattern in pale blue tones. The flowing lines added movement while still keeping the room calm and minimal.

Now the office feels creative, relaxed, and far more personal.

What I’ve Learned About Decorating With Stripes

After experimenting with stripes in several rooms, I realized something important:

Stripes are less about pattern and more about atmosphere.

A soft stripe can make a room feel:

  • taller
  • calmer
  • brighter
  • warmer
  • more refined
  • more intentional

And because stripes are timeless, they don’t feel tied to a passing trend.

I especially love using linen-texture stripe wallpapers because they soften the geometry and create a more relaxed, lived-in feeling.

If you’re nervous about wallpaper, stripes are one of the easiest places to start.

They quietly transform a room without taking it over.

Tips for Choosing the Right Stripe Wallpaper

Choose wide stripes for softness

Wide stripes tend to feel calm, airy, and modern.

Use thin pinstripes for elegance

Narrow stripes add structure and work beautifully in small spaces or entryways.

Try soft colors for a timeless look

Muted blue, sage green, warm ivory, and sandy neutrals feel easier to style long-term.

Consider linen-texture designs

Texture helps stripes feel softer and more organic, especially in minimalist interiors.

Use stripes to change proportions

Vertical stripes visually elongate walls and can make low ceilings feel taller.

Final Thoughts

Before these transformations, many of these rooms felt unfinished in ways that were hard to describe.

Not bad. Just incomplete.

The addition of striped wallpaper brought softness, rhythm, and personality into each space while still keeping the interiors calm and minimal.

Sometimes the smallest design changes create the biggest emotional shift.

And for me, stripes continue to be one of the simplest ways to make a home feel elevated, timeless, and beautifully lived in.
